Juror: Matt Lively
It was such a fun honor to be able to look at all of the submitted work for this show. The variety of media, inventiveness, sense of humor, and thoughtfulness kept me enthralled for some time. Tough task to pick my award winners but after 2 late nights, I did. Leyton Schwartz (Honorable Mention) “Work in Progress” - The additional media of a sketchbook hand incorporated into a painted self portrait seemingly in progress, makes the image approachable and honest. Sydney Purcell (Honorable Mention) “Erik” - The colored pencil in “Erik” was done forcefully and consistently which is an unusual handling of a medium that typically is delicately stacked in gentle layers. This characteristic causes the colors and figure to stand out as more important than the maker of the image. Lucy Schwab (3rd Place) “Open Up”- The paint handling and color changes are very impressive with an unforgiving medium. The subject, gazing away from the viewer while aggressively peeling one eye open, allows for a look into a private moment. Austin Leftwich (2nd Place) “Cover Me Up” - This very active surface in all of its chaotic energy, never quite gets out of hand. It holds together as a cohesive unit by strategically placing textures and colors. Nazy Mutallip (Best in Show) “Pillars” - Using controlled, tight lines and an unusual combination of four materials depicting a personal subject through a universally familiar structure is smartly unforgettable. |
