In the fall of 2009, the art department at Deep Run High School decided to transform the art hallway into a functioning gallery that would rotate senior student work each month. We built out the cinder block walls with drywall, installed track lighting, and completely transformed the previously mundane space into a dynamic art gallery that has now hosted over 60 group and solo exhibitions since its inaugural exhibition in 2009. Our exhibiting students are given complete control over how they use the gallery space for their shows, and are encouraged to think in terms of sculpture, installation, sound, and video projection. This gallery serves not only as an exhibition space, but also as a teaching tool for the younger levels of artists who walk through the gallery on the way to class each day.
